I’d like to know whether it is somehow possible to backup or restore the root password with a cpconf command. It doesn’t seem to be stored in the backup file.

There is no way to restore the default root password, other than to factory default the unit. The password is not stored in cpconf due to security reasons.
That’s a pity then, we have to install a few dozen of them. It could have been stored hashed, I know some other devices that do it that way. At least I know I should not try further then. Thanks for answering!
