Do I have to connect my xbee to a microprocessor?

I am trying to set up a xbee network.
I have one xbee connected to my desktop (home station) , and another connected to arduino (field station).
the arduino is far away from my laptop, so I want to spread some xbees in the way, as midway routers.

I was wandering if a simple battery is enough to get these midway xbees to work, or should I connect them to some microprocessor.

once configured in the same network(ie: same PAN) it can run on batteries, no controller neded for operation.

Which Xbee variant you have?
