Could you please give me some information on the surge protection of the etherlite serial ports or what options I should buy for that purpose.

I don’t know it off the top of my head unfortunately. It is more than likely some sort of diode protection, but the only way to be positive would be for you to provide the part number of the unit, then we’d need to research the schematic and get you a better answer.
To make sure you are protected from all angles, what I’d recommend is getting inline surge protection on the serial ports, then a standard AC power supply surge protection.
