XBee Grove Dev board won't power up using battery

I have several xbee + grove development boards (2 Zigbee mesh kits). Today I wanted to do some range testing away from the computer and for whatever reason applying power to the board using the battery connector causes the board to fail to start up. It just sits there flashing the “Associate” and “On/Sleep” lights very rapidly. Resetting the board in this state doesn’t correct the issue.

This only happens with the though-hole grove boards (all of them). The 2 SMT boards power up fine.

For the TH boards, if I hook it up to a variable supply and roll the voltage up from 0v it will start up correctly.

Any ideas?

Did you ever find a solution? I’m having the same issue.
