Coordinator and End Device require same firmware rev?

I noticed on p.16 of the document:
XBee/XBee‐PRO 802.15.4 OEM RF Modules v1.xAx [2006.10.13]
the following statement:
“Coordinator and End Devices should contain
matching firmware versions.”

Does this mean that once I start shipping coordinators and end devices to customers, that I can no longer upgrade the firmware on future end devices that are intended to connect to coordinators already in the field?

Not at all, you’d be able to upgrade any of them. What this is saying is that if you upgrade one radio to a new version of firmware, you should upgrade them all to that same version.

The reason for this is that we are developing and improving our products, and the way this occurs in a radio is via its firmware. For example, if your coordinator and an adapter had firmware with newer features and another didn’t, you wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the new features on the adapter with the older firmware.
