Is there a way to get the serial number of a device from within the device itself (a text file or root command) for devices that are managed remotely?

Yes there is. Telnet or SSH to the Digi CM and login as root. Once logged in, type “configmenu”. The serial number is listed near the top of the initial menu screen.
