Does the GPIO have internal pull-ups?
I have an existing board with GPIO5 connected to a test point, but without any signal conditioning… trying to see if I could connect this directly to 3.3V or GND without a problem.

Many of the pins on the NS7520 chip itself used in the Digi Connect ME module have internal pullup/pulldowns. I looked in the NS7520 Hardware Reference Guide and found some info on pages # 11-14. I would pay special attention to a note on page #308 concerning pull-ups for No-Connect Pins.
