Is there any other way to have a "button press" on one module turn into a digital logic state change on another module?

My application requires low latency; it is nominally working with “Digimesh” modules in NON-Routing mode, no retries, nobody sleeps, etc. Something like “line passing” (?) would be advantageous over some kind of serial data encoder/decoder pair if it worked fast (<50 ms).
