role of "Dest/AssignedIP" when using ssh direct to Digi CM port

What exactly is the role (if any) of the Dest/Assigned IP when ssh’ing directly to a Digi CM port (ex. ssh -l username 123.123.123.123 -p 7005). By default, there is an ip assigned to each port. On one of the ports I have removed it and there is no difference in behavior. The User Manual is a little bit fuzzy on this topic.

It allows you to assign a unique IP address to a port. Thus eliminating the need for “-p 7005”.
