Set up of async term to interact with USB-ftdi adapter and xBee

I need to use AT commands over a USB-FTDI explorer to a xBee. I know the name, speed and so on.
Can anyone explain how to do it?
So far, I’ve used CoolTerm on OSX. I point CoolTerm to the right port, 9600, N, 8, 1.
I’ve assumed that I should issue the following:
+++ (alone without CR)
ATD1 2 + CR
ATWR + CR and so on

But I never have an OK after the three +s.
Anyone out there using this combination? Which parameters have you set?
Thanks, Elio

What is the exact part number of the xbee module you are working with?

What happens when you use XCTU’s terminal function? Are you able to enter command mode or read the radio?

You mentioned using a USB connection? Who’s USB device are you using and how is the module connected to it?
