Update XBEE firmware from Microcontroller???

I’m currently using the Xbee s2 with a breakout board to my microcontroller on a breadboard. When I update the firmware or change the device type, I use XCTU on my computer. I want to buy the Xbee Surface Mount version, and have it soldered to a PCB board with my mcu, but how would I change the device type or update the firmware? Do I need to make the UART pins available and use a USB to Serial cable and use XCTU? Or is there a way I could load the firmware onto my mcu and have that send it over?
