Xbee programing

I have several questions please.

Does the Xbee have a processor of its own and can it be programmed without an external processor (arduino, computer, ect.)? Can the Xbee interface with a specific IP through a wireless router?

Thank you,
Barak

Yes, the XBee 802.15.4 module has its own processor, it is utilizing the MC13213 chip from Freescale. Once upon a time, Digi supported customers who wanted to write their own application on the module. This meant erasing the Digi firmware from the module and essentially writing your own however, so it was fairly involved.

This process of writing your own code on the 802.15.4 module hasn’t really been supported any longer by Digi for some time now however.

Recently, Digi has come out with their ZigBee device with an external processor that customers can use to load their application code. You might want to look into that to see if it would suit your needs. Haven’t heard anything about if Digi intends to integrate the same thing on the 802.15.4 module one day, but it could be coming…
