Digi TS portserver USR modem communication problem

Hello,

I have a Digi PortServer TS MEI connected to a US Robotics 56K FaxModem. The idea is to create the ability to dial in through the modem to the Digi device which allows me to manage Cisco devices.
I am able to successfully establish a connection using a dialup connection in Windows but my problem is that I am getting a blank screen in SmartTerm. I am not seeing any data. I have this working at a ton of remote branch offices but for some reason the newer devices I’ve been purchasing have not been working.
I’m looking for any guidance on this issue. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I’d start by comparing cabling from a working unit to a non-working unit (perhaps swapping the two) to ensure it’s not tied to a cabling issue. You may also want to try swapping the modems just in case.

After that, I’d compare firmware versions, and if the one that’s working doesn’t match the one that’s not, update (or downgrade) the one that’s not working

Finally, I’d grab the configuration file off of each of the working/non-working devices and compare them side by side and find any differences.

Hello Charlie,
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I made sure to tally a vote for you because I feel that all of your suggestions were legit. In fact, I ran through all of them myself before I found the issue a little earlier this afternoon.

What the problem was actually in the modem configuration. On these modems it is required you add &W(0/1) in order to save or write the command to one of the config profiles. These modems have two profiles, 0 and 1. So you can add &W0 to write to profile 0, &W1 to write to profile 1 or you can simply just add &W which defaults to profile 0.

One day modems will be gone and these problems will be a thing of the past. I look forward to that day.
