If I create a template where all settings are managed and apply it to an IX30, then create a second template with only some settings managed, what will happen when it gets applied to the same IX30? Will the new template “unmanage” settings on the IX30 so they can be changed? Or will all settings still be managed?
I ask because a fully managed template chews up a lot of my cellular data when my IX30 is deployed in the field. My thought is do one “fully managed” template push on my LAN and then only push out minor updates once the device is deployed. But if the “minor updates” still push the full template (even the unmanaged settings), there isn’t much point.
If I understand what you are asking, it is dependent on which order the Templates are run via the Automation scripts on which one will be processed first and second. The 2nd template is the one that will have the finished settings.
So about the order specifically, say I apply the full template today and deploy the IX30 to the field. 3 weeks (or even months) from now I decide I really need some setting turned on/off so I create a new template with only that setting managed. All other settings are set to unmanaged. If I apply that template, will all the settings flip to unmanaged so they could be changed by someone who logs in locally?
My understanding of templates is that DRM pushes every setting if the "managed setting” box in the template is checked. Can I essentially create a presumably smaller vector file by only checking the box for the one setting I want changed? Or does unchecking every box except one flip all the settings except one to unmanaged on the remote device, thereby allowing a local user with device access to change any setting they want (except that one in the template)? I still want to manage every setting, but I don’t want to chew up megabytes of my data plan just to change the Time Zone (for example).
@Tim_Myth , keep in mind that only a single template can be active on a given Device Type within a Group at a time, so the Template which takes precedence is the one which is actually Active on the device at that time. The Template will only compare the settings which are specified as Managed, and will either ignore the Unmanaged settings, or configure the settings accordingly for Site-specific settings (based on your overrides.csv file).
As for theories and device usage, rather than making sweeping changes which affect an entire inventory of devices, try moving a single “lab” or test device off into its own group, then copy your Template to that new group. That way you can make Template changes which only affect a single test device (rather than all devices of the specified type/Group), and can monitor the amount of data used by that single device as an eval of whether its worth migrating proposed Template changes out to your greater Digi RM device inventory.
