What kind of sample are you looking for. They are designed so that they will communicate right out of the box.

Yes, you do need to have antennas on them. If you follow the Quick start guide, it will have you communicating in less than 5 min.
May I use a 2.4 GHz antenna just for a test?
It is not recommended but a mismatched antenna is better than no antenna. Just understand that it may not perform as well.
