Protection for DOUT from 5v

Hi,

I’ve just ordered two 1mW XBee modules (whip antenna) for interfacing to an Atmel ATMega1280. The adapter I’ll be using buffers DIN, RESET, DTR and RTS to 3.3V but DOUT would be connected directly to the Rx pin on the Atmel.

Given that it’s possible to (accidentally) configure the Rx pin on the microcontroller to be an output and drive it to 5V, would this be tolerated by DOUT on the XBee? It’s a highly unlikely scenario, of course, but I prefer to avoid such situations.

My thought would be (if necessary) to use a CD4050BC to buffer DOUT up to 5V but I’m not sure if this would also protect the XBee?

Thanks,
Paul.
