Single COM port missing on AccelePort C/X

Hi,

I recently moved a PCI AccelePort on a server running Windows 2003 OS, which connects to 8 C/CON 16-port concentrators, to a newer server connecting to the same setup and also running Windows Server 2003.

Ports are assigned COM3 through COM130. After updating the driver all the ports on the new server are working except for COM19 (connecting to port 17 on the concentrator).

I cannot see anything wrong but can anyone point me in some direction as to where I should be looking to resolve the issue?

Regards,
Brian

Hi Brian,

Does the port/com # show up in the device manager under ports, (com and lpt)?

I’m not sure what to suggest. You could try stopping any application using the ports, uninstalling the driver from the device manager and then reinstalling the driver and see if it installs correctly.

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion. All of the ports COM3 through COM130 show up correctly in the device manager except for COM19 which is skipped and does not show.

I have upgraded to the latest driver and all of the other ports are working correctly but you think it would be useful to uninstall and reinstall this driver?

I will do this and report back.

Brian

I should add that COM19 is shown in the Ports Configuration window in Device Manager. It is however, not shown in Ports (COM & LPT)

In the device manager, check if you have a modem installed. If yes, check the modem, properties, diagnostics to see if it is associated with com 19.

Hi,

Yes, I can see that modem number 17 (out of 128) is associated with COM19. But COM19 does not exist on the server.

I have not yet organised to take down all the modems to reinstall the driver but will do so tomorrow morning. I have installed the driver successfully on another server with no missing COM ports so hopefully it will be a simple matter to switch the two!

I will report back tomorrow.

My thanks for your input.

Hey Brian,

I have seen occasionally where the com port is “removed” or “hidden” from the drop down list when something has grabbed the port for its own use. For example, a fax program may use the modem on com 19, port 17 and remove it from the port list so no other application will try to use it. I don’t know if that is by design or not. If the app which tries to use that modem uses it without error, I don’t know if you need to do anything.

Apologies, I meant to post a reply to this some time ago and forgot.

The particular COM port 19 could not be used by the desired application.

However, we resolved the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the driver as you suggested. This time all 128 ports were present and accounted for and no further issues have been experienced.

My thanks again for your help.

Regards,
Brian
