Xbee mode between AT and API

Hi,

I am using XB24-AWI-001.
The default mode of Xbee is transparent mode.

When it is configured for API mode with AT command “ATAP 1” and API packet is assembled and sent it doesnt work until :

  1. either the AT mode goes into time out (ATCT)
  2. or exit is fired explicitly (ATCN)

What is this state of XBee called ??
Once configured in API mode , still one can fire AT commands and do configurations . How does this work ? What is the use case. !!
