Driver issue on VM

Hi,
I have installed relevent drivers for my USB Anywhere device but am getting “The Device is not configured corrcetly” and there is a yellow explination mark in device manager.
I have tried the latest drivers here http://www.digi.com/support/productdetl.jsp?pid=2660&osvid=58&tp=1&s=45 but it did not help

The server is a VMWare Virtual server on esx 3.x.

See attached screen shots.

Thanks for any help you can give.

George

The following workaround is required for installing an AnywhereUSB in a Virtual Machine:

  1. Make sure Windows is configured to show file extensions. In My Computer, click “Tools / Folder Options” then click the “View” tab. Scroll down and uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types” (unless it’s already unchecked) then click OK.

  2. Search the Windows CD (that matches the OS of the Host PC) for a file called “usbd.sy_” (it should be in the i386 folder). For example, if the Host PC is running Windows 2003, then use a Windows 2003 CD.

  3. Copy “usbd.sys_” and paste it in “c:\windows\system32\drivers” (or c:\winnt\system32\drivers for Windows 2000), then rename the file to “usbd.sys”. Be sure to paste it in the “drivers” folder, not just “system32”.

  4. Open the AnywhereUSB Configuration Utility, click “View / Driver Information / Uninstall” and reboot the Virtual Machine when prompted.

  5. After Windows loads, re-install the AnywhereUSB software and follow the normal installation procedure - you should go through a total of 5 found new hardware wizards, and the 5 port LEDs should be solid green once the AnywhereUSB is installed and connected to the Host PC.

Hello

I just read your post and would like to use the procedure you described. But on the CD I have, named AWUSBv1.80, I don’t find the I386 folder and thus the wished ‘usbd.sy_’ file. I guess there is an updated release of the CD containing more data. Where could I donwload it from ?
Thanks for helping ! Francis.

The file “usbd.sy_” is on the Windows CD, not the Digi CD.

Hello
Thanks for your help !
I’m now trying to copy the ‘usbd.sys’ file from Windows 2003 CD to the WINDOWS\system32\dricers folder: no way ! My new file overlaps the old existing ‘usbd.sys’, but it is somehow recreated. How could I identify the process that is active and updates this ‘usbd.sys’ driver ?

If you already have “usbd.sys” in system32\drivers then there’s (usually) no reason to copy it from the CD. Some virtual machines are missing that file, which is needed for the AnywhereUSB to install.

What exactly is the issue you’re running into now?

There is an application running on my virtual machine. It checks every minute the presence of an USB dongle connected behind the USB over IP adaptor. When I migrate my virtual machine from one server to the second one, my application doesn’t regognize anymore this USB dongle and thus stops working. I then need, using the AnywhereUSB config utility, to manually disconnect and reconnect the USB over IP adaptor. After that, my application regognizes the USB dongle.

What mechanism are you using to migrate the virtual machine? VMotion? Something else?

The next time you migrate, please gather the following information for me (before you manually disconnect/reconnect the AnywhereUSB):

  1. What is the color/activity of the System Status light as well as the 5 port lights on the front panel of the AnywhereUSB?

  2. If you look in the AnywhereUSB Configuration Utility (on the “migrated” VM), what is the Status at the bottom-right? It should be something like “Connected to this computer” or “Connecting to this computer”. Take a screen capture of this for me.

  3. If you look at the AnywhereUSB Viewer Utility (again, on the “migrated” VM), are the two AnywhereUSB Host Controllers listed? Take a screen capture of this for me.

  4. If you look in Device Manager (maximized, with the “Universal Serial Bus controllers” section expanded), are any AnywhereUSB components listed? Take a screen capture of this for me.

I did delete + re-install the AnywhereUSB driver and the VMWare migration seems to be seamless for my application. It only detects once a dongle Id issue, and is happy the next time it tries, one minute later.
I have an other question regarding init of my Win2k3Server. I currently need, using the config utility to manualy reboot the AnywhereUSB box in order to affect it to my server, although it is detected. It there any way I could have an automatic affectation of this single AnywhereUSB ?

Are you aware of the reboot button in the AnywhereUSB Configuration Utility?
