No response from serial device

I had a Sartorius serial scale connected to an Edgeport/2 USB to Serial device and had the scale working. When I unplugged the scale and plugged the device into the physical COM1 port and then back to the Edgeport/2 I could no longer communicate using the Edgeport/2. Communications continue to work correctly to the scale on the physical COM1 port, but not on the Edgeport/2.

Are there any special anomalies I should be looking for? I’ve tried rebooting the PC, unplugging the scale, plugging the Edgeport/2 into another USB port. All to no avail.

The settings on the USB-Serial port are:
2400 baud
7 data bits
Even Parity
1 stop bit
Hardware handshaking

I have made sure that the USB COM port (in this case COM3) matches the serial device.

Any ideas are welcome!

Hi,

I am speculating that Com3 is already in use by another device on your system already (perhaps a modem).

Try changing the com port assignment in question to 6 or 7 using our edgeport.exe program (START/RUN and type in “edgeport” without the quotes/configure button).

You need to make sure that the EP/2 is plugged in, flashing green and also make sure no apps are open that would be using any of the ports.

After you change the com port assignment(s) do you have better results?

Sorry, same response. No other devices are connected to the PC and I tried port 4 and 5.

  1. Disconnect all serial cables/devices from the Edgeport serial ports then reboot the PC. After Windows loads, run the Edgeport Configuration Utility and click “Test Ports” then click “Begin Test”. Do the ports pass or fail the test?

  2. In the software application you’re using to communicate with your scale, make sure you’re “telling” that application to use the correct COM port. There should be a drop box (or the like) somewhere in the preferences/options where you can select the COM port to use. Make sure it’s not still set to COM 1 - it should match the Edgeport serial port that it’s connected to. For example, if your current configuration is: Edgeport serial port 1 = COM 4, and Edgeport serial port 2 = COM 5, and the scale is attached to serial port 1, then you would use COM 5.

  3. What exact error message(s) are you getting when you try to communicate with the scale, through the Edgeport?
