Which modules to choose for DigiMesh?

The XBee® Family Features Comparison chart shows S1 chipset modules as the only family under DigiMesh group. New article “Digi XBee® S2C 802.15.4 – Let Your Imagination Run Wireless!” mentions Digi XBee® S2C 802.15.4 as firmware upgradable to DigiMesh. Can it really run DigiMesh?

Secondly, is there any reason not to buy S2C modules for a new DigiMesh network of 7 nodes placed in outdoors area about 600ft x 600ft with no supply power use constraints and buy S1 modules instead? It seems that S2C modules are superior in every way:

  1. Less expensive: $17.50 vs $19;
  2. Longer range for standard version: 4000ft vs. 300ft;
  3. Current draw: 33mA vs 45mA;

No, Digi Mesh is not supported on the s2C hardware. Only the Zigbee enabled mesh is supported on it.

I would strongly suggest contacting you local Digi Sales office so they can help you determine the correct product to use.

I am not even sure you need mesh. The S1 802.15.4 out of the box supports a peer to peer, point to point or point to multi-point.
