I am looking for a USB device server but I can’t find any meaningful comparisons of the Digi AnywhereUSB with the Lantronix UBox 4100 or the Silex Pricom SX-5000U2, both of which seem to do a very similar job for a substantially lower price. Does anyone know what additional features or performance the AnywhereUSB provides?

Hi Rowan,
It really just depends on your needs. Something that these companies won’t come out and tell you is that they are limited to the type of USB devices that can be used on them.
The Lantronix and the Silex are only good for shareable types of USB devices, like storage devices, scanners, printers (or any other shareable USB device)
A usb device is either shareable or it isn’t. Their devices aren’t going to make a normally not shareable device shareable just because it’s plugged into their box.
With our AnywhereUSB you can plug in almost any type of USB device to it and install it on your local system. Again, if the device is shareable it’s shareable on the AnywhereUSB…if it’s not shareable that restriction stands.
If you need to share printers and usb storage devices among multiple users the Lantronix and Silex should probably work just fine for you. If you need to extend the distances of almost (I say almost becuase we do not support isochronous USB devices becuase of strict timing issues) any USB device the AnywhereUSB would be better for you.
Hope this helps, please feel free to contact me with any additional questions.
What about if the device is a USB barcode scanner where the data input direction is from the barcode scanner to the console PC (with AnywhereUSB driver installed)? Is there an advantage of AnywhereUSB compare to the others. In my set up, I am currently using up to 200 barcode scanners (currently set up about 30-40 units to a single AnywhereUSB with USB Hub daisy-chaining)?
Hi, I just wanted to let you know I just emailed you some drivers.
I am not aware of any other device out there that is just like ours. There are USB extenders and USB hubs that can attach via the network but they are limited to only certain types of USB devices. Ours enumerate as fully functional USB ports which look local to the system.
Jeremy is currently investigating your issues with the scanners dropping off. I would think you’d probably have better results if you were to increase the number of AnywhereUSB’s and have less hubs daisy chained. We can explore that option if necessary.
Thanks for the heads up Mike. I will be on the lookout for the drivers.
Fyi, if you could share this with Jeremy as well (maybe I should log it in the case file), I have just replaced the console PC with version 1.90 driver today. I will be monitoring it to see, if there is any impact or not.
