Up until now I have been using the DIGI WR31(with a simcard which is attached to a VPN), to connect a Leica total station to my WR31 serial connection on the front of the unit, via RS232 and operating the total station via software(Geomos) remotely on another machine.
I recently bought the DIGI IX30 and am having a real difficulty in getting the same setup working.
Can someone please help or explain, is the IX30 not compatible to work over RS232? or maybe there are major limitations?
the UI and OS is very different also, therefore its impossible to just copy the configuration file or match the settings, everything is COMPLETELY different.
The IX30 runs a more modern Operating System called DAL, so it’s expected that the UI is very different.
Technically speaking, how does this Geomos software communicate with the Leica total station through the WR31? For example, does it use a COM port number (if it’s running on a Windows computer)? Or does it connect through a TCP Socket? Do you know? Once we know the answer to this, we can provide relevant documentation on how to setup the IX30 for your needs.
Hiya, the Leica GeoMos monitor software mainly takes 2 parameters when you setup operation of the leica total station instrument.
It takes the IP Address of the simcard (which is located in the DIGI IX30)
it also takes a port number, usually one which is preconfigured(we usually preconfigured them in on the DIGI WR31, but cannot get that replicated on the IX30)
The GeoMos software runs on a windows machine.
No idea if it runs through a specified TCP socket, I wouldn’t think so, unless it is necessary to work via serial.
Currently i am using 4000, but tried 4001 also, usually whatever port number is set on the DIGI unit, is the one that gets used in the geomos software.
It sounds like you’re on the right track with the TCP port number, as long as you’ve configured the Serial Port of your Digi IX30 for Serial Mode = Remote Access (TCP). You would also need to enable TCP connection under the Serial Port config (default is for TCP port 4001), and change connection type to RAW TCP connection. You’ll also want to visit the Access Control List area for the serial port and likely set this to External, since it sounds like your serial connection will be coming in over the IX30’s cellular interface.
Which brings up one other important point. Can you access the WebUI or SSH via the cellular IP address of your SIM card? If you can access the WebUI of your device via the cellular interface, that indicates your SIM is a mobile terminated type, which is what would be required to access the Serial Port of the IX30 as well, so this is a good test. If the cellular IP is something you can’t connect to the WebUI or SSH to, its a good bet that you wouldn’t be able to tunnel in to the Serial Port/serial device either.
