We are using the AnywhereUSB boxes in the following config:
Win XP SP2 Virtual machine (via Labmanager/ESX) <-> LAN <-> Switch (Cisco catalyst 6500) <-> router Linksys <-> AnywhereUSB (ie digibox) <–> USB JTAG emulator
- Firmware version is 2.30.5.
- Awusbcfg.exe version is 2.51.1.
- USBAnywhere box get IP address via DHCP from the router
We see that the Digibox disconnects. Looking at the event log viewer it says: Host disconnected. Looks it happens after a completly random time (for example 6, 12, 22, 50 minutes, 15 hours…etc).
After that I can only reconnect by restart the host machine, even if the status is “available for host connection”.
From the digibox point of view what step would you advise to debug the issue?
I have seen in the config utility/preferences that you can enable event logging. Is the log the same as the event log? or can you get more debug information?
If yes how do you retrieve it?
From you experience what are the most likely scenario that lead to a “host disconnected” message?
To do more debugging on our side it is likely that we will need to use a Network sniffer. Are there any digibox log information that can help us to understand at which particular messages/protocol we need to look at?
I have the same recommendation. Try other switches, especially “lower end” switches.
Besides that, it would be good to know if this issue occurs when no USB devices are attached to the AnywhereUSB.
Unfortunately, we can’t offer much help when it comes to interpreting the log files. That info is more useful to our engineering group when they’re troubleshooting.
The ethernet switch might be the issue for the (Host Inactivity) issue. I would need to investigate further.
But I do not think the switch is the issue for the (Host disconnected) issue. I made a test, see at the end of the email.
Just to clarify:
The (Host Inactivity) issue present from the very beginning of the Digibox evaluation. See
http://www-.digi.com/support/forum/viewthread_thread,5024#16110
The (Host disconnected) issue appeared at some points.
The HW (Ethernet Switch, ESX server, …etc) has not changed. Still there has been some SW changes (Digibox drivers, USB JTAG device drivers, …etc).
It is critical that we identify the reason of the disconnection (ie Host disconnected) of the digibox.
We want to analyze the network traffic with a Network anlayzor but we would need to understand what kind of traffic we need to track.
a) Could you please give us some pointers on what kind of traffic we need to look at to identify what causes this “Host disconnected” issue?
b) What is likely to cause a Host disconnected log? It it purely a Network side problem? or could it come from the USB side too?
c) Any tool that we could use to get more log information from the Digibox?
----------- Test with SD208 Switch:
I place a Ethernet Switch (Linsys SD208) in the system. Since I can not remove the Cisco one, I just added the new switch in between. I do not see any changes in the behavior. Here is the topology:
Win XP SP2 Virtual machine (via Labmanager/ESX) <-> LAN <-> Switch (Cisco catalyst 6500) <-> Linksys SD208 switch <-> router Linksys <-> AnywhereUSB (ie digibox) <–> USB JTAG emulator
Regarding your a, b, c questions related to interpreting the AnywhereUSB Event Log, I’ll try to get help from our engineering group. Expect a reply from me tomorrow as a follow-up to this.
Concerning the appropriate support channel, it’s completely up to you. The level of quality here is the same as any other method. Personally, I like this support forum because other customers can learn from it, for example, by reviewing others topics.
Did you have a chance to get in touch with Engineering?
On you side the issue look to be on the USB device/USBanywhere box communication. Looks like that something happening at the USB level force the Digibox to disconnect from the Network. The problem happens only with this USB JTAG device.
We would need some help to debug further to understand where/when it happens. Therefore it would be helpful to get more log from the digibox box.
They would like to first look into the other issue where your AnywhereUSB is periodically rebooting (your other topic).
Are you willing and able to get a sniffer/network trace from the host to the AnywhereUSB, that collects information during the time period where the AnywhereUSB “randomly” reboots? If so, that would be helpful. Once you have that, I’ll give you instructions on where to upload it.
Also, after the next “random” reboot, please save your AnywhereUSB Event Log and upload it here.
