We are setting up 3x 8modem RAS cards in each of 5 servers. On 3 of the servers, all 3 cards - 24 modems are installed w/o a hitch. On the other 2 servers, when we add the 3rd card, the 1st card no longer works/starts.
In device manager, it just says the card could not start.
This is on windows 2000 server.
How do I get all 3 cards working? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalled numerous times, even tried switching out one of the cards w/ a spare, but no luck.
This sounds like a resource conflict between the two cards. To find out if that’s the case, go to Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information. Look under the “Hardware Resources” category, then “Conflicts/Sharing”. Are there any conflicts listed?
In a perfect world, an IRQ being used by a PCI card should be able to share with another PCI card, but this isn’t always the case. A method to resolve an IRQ conflict would be to try the card in a different PCI slot, or even go so far as changing the order of the PCI cards on the bus. Some PC’s have an option settable in BIOS which will allow you to designate an IRQ for a certain PCI slot as well, so that’s another possibility if your BIOS allows it.
Here is a link to an article that describes the issue in more detail:
