Using XBee DIO Adapter without ConnectPort

Is it possible to use a DIO Adapter without a ConnectPort?

I want to aggregate digital pulses, and every N pulses send a specific message out the radio to another Xbee device.

Is this possible?
How do I get started?

Thanks for the link… I just bought and read the book (Kindle)…

However, I’m specifically trying to use the Xbee DIO Adapter which evidently has a specially programmed Xbee card…

The book doesn’t speak about this device at all…

Do you know anything about how this specific device can be used without a connect port?
