Add Printer to Edgeport 8

I have inherited a project at a convenience store with win xp embedded and an edgeport 8 usb device. The com port assignment is based on converter serial number and ‘disable plug and play’ flags are clear. port#'s on edgeport are 3 - 10. Using add printer wizard, has option for com1-com4 in port selection drop-down. What do i need to do to make use of additional com ports thru edgeport for additional printers?
Thank you very much…

Hi Tim,

To answer your question, there shouldn’t be anything that you need to do, in order to “use” the Edgeport’s 8 serial/COM ports. That seems strange that the add printer wizard is only letting you choose COM 1 - COM 4.

I wonder if the cause of this issue could somehow be related to the fact that the OS is running XP Embedded. Can you give more more info about OS, especially related to what kind of things are “locked down”? Please forgive my ignorance of XP Embedded.

Have you also tried the “auto detect” option in the add printer wizard? If so, what is the result? Of course you would want to make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the Edgeport with the proper serial cable, when trying this.

Do you know what the normal installation procedure is for these printers? In other words “should” they normally be installed manually, or via auto detect?

Please also upload the following screen captures from that PC:

  1. Edgeport Configuration Utility (the General tab with the Edgeport expanded).

  2. Windows Device Manager (maximized) with the “Ports (COM & LPT)” section expanded.
